Germany's Youth Word of the Year (Jugendwort des Jahres) for 2026 is "Ragebait", a term many English speakers may recognise from social media.
But the most interesting part of the story may not be the winning word itself. All three finalists were English terms, showing just how heavily modern German youth slang draws on international online culture, gaming and social media.
The result was announced at the weekend by publisher Langenscheidt at the Frankfurt Book Fair after a nationwide vote among young people aged 11 to 20.
A close contest
The final vote was remarkably tight. "Ragebait" won with 36.5 percent of the vote, while "Peak" followed closely on 33.8 percent and "Crashout" finished on 29.7 percent.
Langenscheidt did not publish the exact number of votes cast in the final round, but reports suggest around one million young people participated during the overall Youth Word of the Year campaign.
The annual competition has been running since 2008, with young people themselves choosing the winner since 2020.

English words, different meanings
The words on the shortlist should sound familiar to native English speakers, although the meanings may not.
In youth slang, the term “ragebait” refers to content designed to provoke outrage and drive reactions online.
For example, a post containing an outrageous opinion or obviously false claim could be dismissed as "just ragebait" because its main purpose is to generate comments, shares and attention.
"Peak" is used to describe something exceptional. If a concert, football match or video game is especially good, a teenager might say it was "peak".
The third word to make the shortlist was "Crashout", which describes someone losing their composure, overreacting or having an emotional meltdown.
According to Langenscheidt, this is the first time since 2023 that all three finalists have been English words.
In the UK, “ragebait” was selected as Oxford University Press's Word of the Year in 2025.
